Two years ago, on our way out of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake, we stopped at Jayco’s campus in Middlebury, Indiana to check out some of their newest RVs. We own three different Jayco RVs and Jayco sponsors two of them.

That’s why we wanted to interview the product manager behind the product launch, John Fisher. We had the pleasure of speaking with John and learning about his plans for the Hummingbird line. Since then, sales of the Hummingbird line have increased and the variety of floor plans has expanded. The latest entry in the series, the Hummingbird 10RK, really caught our attention. Not because it makes sense for our family of five (six including Maggie the Camping Dog!)
Small rum has always been forbidden fruit for us. We cheered them on because they looked so happy! You can take it anywhere and drive it with many different vehicles. Maybe I can convince Stephanie to buy one to rent or use for occasional weekend getaways without the kids.
Either way, we thought it was a good time to check back in with John Fisher and learn all about the newest entry in the Hummingbird line.
Meet John Fisher RVFTA: Tell us about your position at Jayco and your role in bringing the Hummingbird line to market.

John Fisher: I am the Senior Product Development Manager for Jayco lightweight brands, including White Hawk, Jay Feather, Hummingbird & Jay Sport camping trailers. With the growing demand for smaller lightweight trailers, I approached management with a market study in 2015 that showed a growing trend of expanding the trailer market with design and investment plans. from the Product Development Team. Jayco’s entry into this market is a no-brainer, so we are targeting the 2017 model year for the launch of our new brand, Hummingbird, and bring it to market on May 1, 2016. .
RVFTA: The new Hummingbird 10RK is making a lot of noise among small trailer fans. Give us some basic details about this trailer – weight, length, height – and which customers do you think will buy it?
John Fisher: Our Sales Team came to me a few months ago asking for a smaller tow vehicle that would appeal to the type of customer whose Jeep Wrangler tows around 2000 pounds. They wanted another option for campers who weren’t interested in camping trailers. The 10RK is 13 feet long and 90 inches tall above the TV antenna, which is a key feature that allows the model to be placed in a garage as long as the door is 8 feet high or higher. If you watch the Hummingbird 10RK video (see below)…you will see Jayco Towable Brand Manager Ryan Galasso and I walking that little bird around!
John Fisher: Jayco’s 2-year warranty is always a great feature and one of the most important things we offer, giving our campers 2 full seasons of camping protection! American nitrogen-filled 15-inch Goodyear Endurance tires are standard with self-adjusting electric brakes. We’re very proud to put American tires on all of our Jayco and Fifth Wheel trailer brands, as they have the highest load and speed ratings in the industry – and I know our customers Feel more confident when driving with Goodyear tires. !! All 10RKs have a standard attached lower section with an additional layer of AstroFoil insulation, so the MPG is better with less wind resistance and retains any wires, tanks, etc. protected from the elements and road debris.
A New Tiny Trailer: The Jayco Hummingbird 10rk
It also features an A-frame and beam preparation on the roof to give customers the opportunity to go more “off the grid.” There is an external luggage door on the side of the camper that can accommodate the optional outdoor grill or it is attached to the standard porta potty, which I found to be a nice extra feature. We placed the outdoor grill pole behind the side of the camper, which allowed us to add a nice sized window to the side of the camper. An electric tongue twister is also a standard feature on the 10RK. (All of these listed features apply to the Hummingbird 10RK except the Rockwood Geo or Flagstaff Eco). Additionally, the now popular A-frame 2-bike rack is optional, as are all of our other Hummingbird models.
John Fisher: The 10RK has standard Fantastic Fan roof vents, which can really move a lot of air. We also offer a side-mounted 8,000 BTU air conditioner for customers who want their apartment to be nice and cozy!! The 10RK has a standard Furrion Lit portable Bluetooth speaker mounted inside so you can stream music inside or outside the bus, and it also has a TV mount and connector inside as well as being available 24-inch 2-way (12V). /120V) standard. LED TV behind the outdoor kitchen. Internal overhead storage, multiple shelves, removable cup holders, stylish bedside cube area & USB and 110 additional bills for the interior.
The mattress is a 54×74 mattress covered in our soft Teddy bear cover, providing beauty and comfort. The outdoor kitchen has the aforementioned TV, 2-way refrigerator (also 12V/120V), microwave, USB port, kitchen sink with detachable faucet and included sprayer that functions as an outdoor shower, It also provides storage and a drawer. – drawers. RVFTA: At a time when RVs are getting bigger, it seems like you’re pushing your Jayco line in reverse. Why are you interested in moving design and manufacturing to smaller parts?
John Fisher: We wanted to make sure there was a great option for people with limited towing capabilities in that 2000-3500 class. Best of all, we have great alternatives in the White Hawk and Jay Feather models, but that’s why our Hummingbird and teardrop features are so important!! Our goal is to continue to design innovative floor plans and features suitable for the 3500 class and below. One thing that is very interesting is the demographics of this camp, where for the first time we see seasoned campers and even many retirees selling their bikes to “downsize”.
John Fisher: We recently designed the first Murphy bed in the Hummingbird range. The 16MBS (non-slip) just hit the market and we have the new 17MBS coming in May. Both are impressive floor plans aimed at 3500 #+ cars. But with a Murphy bed you get an extra bench seat that you don’t find in trailers, and both of these new models have hard tops and tons of storage!!
